Unlock the secrets of playing thirds on the viola with an exercise that has stood the test of time.

In the early 90s, my teacher, Roger Best, shared a game-changing technique with me while I was studying at the Royal College of Music.

It was the days before modern computers and Canva; he beautifully wrote out these exercises by hand, cut them out, and then typed the instructions on a word processor!

This exercise dissects and reconstructs a scale in thirds, aiming to improve listening and, ultimately, tuning. I’m sharing it here in the hope it may help others.

Are you ready to elevate your thirds?

Give it a try!
