Pedal Exercitium - Viola Arrangement
J. S. Bach's Pedal Exercitium (BWV 598) is a short work traditionally associated with the practice of organ pedal technique, though its attribution to Bach remains uncertain.
This arrangement transfers its characteristic perpetual-motion passagework to the viola, making a demanding technical study for the more advanced player. Its continuous semiquaver movement is particularly valuable for developing clean, even string crossings.
The original breaks off rather than ends, so players are warmly invited to create an ending of their very own.
An unusual addition to the viola repertoire, and a suitably fiendish challenge for Halloween.
**Half-Term Violin and Viola Scale Quest**
As teachers, we are always trying to find new ways to encourage our pupils to keep practising their scales.
Here is a printable poster designed for my violin and viola pupils, to explore and engage some of the most important technical foundations of string playing. It calls for students to “capture” the most beautiful scale ever heard and proudly present it in their next lesson.
